Backstory[]
June was born slightly before the turn of the century. She was named after her paternal grandmother, June Stephens, who disguised herself as a man to fight in the Civil War.[1] June grew up with her sister Clare, who is 3 years older.[2] They had a happy childhood until their mother Irene Parker left the family when June was 12. After that, June's father moved the family from London to New York when June was about 13[3] in the summer of 1902.[4] After their move to Orchid Island, New York, the housekeeper Martha Talbot and her then-fiancé Walter Talbot also became a part of the household and helped raise June and Clare. The Talbots were hired in September 1903.[5]
After graduating from high school June decided against pursuing a university degree like her sister. Instead she returned to London at age 17 and worked different jobs before going to nursing school.[6] June served as a nurse in the first world war sometime between 1914 and 1918. She met her future ex-husband, Nicky Bennett, while serving as a nurse in France in 1917. They divorced and she did not speak to him for close to nine years.[7]
